COBB COUNTY, GA — Cobb County School District officials are reviewing whether recent comments made by teachers on social media violated district communication policy. The review comes in the wake of the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk during a school/college event, which sparked a wave of online discussion, including among local educators.

District leaders are not disclosing specific names but confirmed they are aware of online activity by teachers that could conflict with professional expectations. Posts reviewed by Cobb Voice include remarks made by Cobb County educators on public platforms.

One post described the Kirk assassination as “predictable” and questioned whether “figures like him should ever be invited to schools or universities.” Another teacher shared, “Good riddance to hate. Students deserve safe spaces, not provocateurs like Kirk.”

The Cobb County School District’s Employee Handbook is explicit about communications. Under “Professional Use of Social Media and Communication”, the handbook states:

“Employees are expected to maintain professionalism in all communications, whether written, spoken, or digital. Personal use of social media or other public forums that undermines the reputation of the District, its employees, students, or community members may be subject to disciplinary action.”

It further warns:

“Employees shall refrain from making public comments, written or verbal, that may reasonably be interpreted as representing the views of the District or that disparage individuals or groups in conflict with the District’s mission of respect and inclusivity.”

Although the district has not released any names, a search of publicly accessible social media identified educators making such remarks, including one recognized for professional honors and another listed in official school publications. These identifiers confirm the individuals are active Cobb County teachers but are not related to their comments.

Critics argue that posts celebrating or dismissing Kirk’s death could be interpreted as violating both the letter and spirit of the employee handbook. Supporters of stricter enforcement say such remarks risk eroding parent trust in the school system.

For now, no disciplinary measures have been announced. The district reiterated in a statement that, “Our employees are held to high standards as role models for students. We expect all staff to follow guidelines for professional communication in all forums, including online.”
