As families across Cobb County prepare to celebrate the Fourth of July, a deeper ideological struggle is unfolding right under our noses, one that pits traditional American values against an aggressive new brand of socialism.
In New York City, Zohran Mamdani, a self-declared socialist with ties to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), has clinched the Democratic nomination for mayor. But what’s more shocking is the support he’s receiving from Georgia’s own elected officials.
Georgia Democrats Endorse Radical NYC Socialist Candidate
Gabriel Sanchez, a DSA-endorsed state representative from Smyrna, and Ruwa Romman, a state legislator representing parts of Gwinnett and North Fulton, have proudly support Mamdani’s campaign. Sanchez, who ran on a platform that includes a $20 minimum wage, rent control, police divestment, and opposition to capitalism, posted on social media:

“Such an amazing moment to witness a true fighter for the working class, Zohran Mamdani, win in NYC. Such a great time talking to New Yorkers about the need for real change. We are building this movement across the country, and can’t wait to continue to fight for you in GA HD 42!“
“Zohran is the kind of visionary leader our cities need. We must move beyond capitalism to create a truly just society.”
Romman echoed the sentiment, saying Mamdani’s platform “is about justice and equity, exactly what our communities need.”

But Mamdani’s record speaks volumes. He has advocated to abolish billionaires, implement government-run grocery stores, eliminate cash bail, and defund the police. He has even tweeted inflammatory slogans like “Globalize the Intifada.”
In a recent NBC News interview Mamdani make his radical socialist views very clear:
As National Review warned, “This mayoral race is not an isolated incident. It’s part of a coordinated effort turning America’s cities into training camps where socialist policies will eventually be pushed nationwide.”
And here in Cobb County, the ideological fault lines are cracking.
Cobb Republicans Push Back Against Extremism
While most mainstream Democrats like Senator Michael “Doc” Rhett and Rep. Teri Anulewicz have avoided directly supporting Sanchez, others in the Capitol have welcomed him at events or stayed conspicuously silent.
Meanwhile, Cobb County Republicans aren’t staying quiet.
“My opponent’s win shows how extreme and out of touch with Georgians the Democrats have become. Voters who want low taxes, safe communities, and parents empowered on education decisions have a clear choice in this race.” – Diane Jackson, Republican candidate for House District 42
“They definitely would have [voted Democrat in the primary]. The only thing we were deciding on the Republican side in Cobb County was the sheriff’s race. I was personally canvassed by his campaign three or four times.” – Skylar Akins, Vice President, Atlanta Young Republican (via Atlanta Civic Circle, May 22, 2024)
A Fork in the Road for Cobb Voters
Back in Cobb, some claim that the local Democrat Party is not the party of their parents. In fact, they say voters can continue sliding toward a platform that demonizes capitalism, weakens public safety, and supports radical anti-American rhetoric — or they can say enough is enough.
