A group of demonstrators gathered Monday outside the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office in downtown Atlanta, calling for an end to immigration enforcement actions and the release of a union leader detained in California.

Among those in attendance was State Representative Gabriel Sanchez (D-Marietta, HD-42), who appeared alongside activists denouncing federal immigration law enforcement, including ICE operations in Georgia. Sanchez’s presence at the rally signals a growing alignment between progressive state lawmakers and groups advocating for the abolition of immigration enforcement mechanisms.

The event, which began in the early afternoon and concluded by 4 p.m., featured speakers from labor and activist organizations. Participants called for the release of David Huerta, a California union leader reportedly detained by ICE, and voiced support for broader immigration reform policies that would limit or eliminate ICE’s role in interior enforcement.

“The only way we’re going to get change… is to unite as one,” said Shaekia Calhoun with the Union of Southern Service Workers, a group who openly Marxist ideologies and far left progressive goals are well documented.

Attendees held signs, chanted, and demanded an end to deportations and immigration raids. According to organizers, similar demonstrations were held Monday in over 15 cities across the country.

One protester, Toni Pastore of Decatur, stated, “We’re a nation of immigrants, and everybody deserves to be treated with respect and get their constitutional right.”

Peaceful Demonstration Monitored by Atlanta Police

The Atlanta Police Department was on-site to ensure order, and no arrests were reported. The rally remained peaceful, though its messaging struck a strong tone against federal immigration policies that have long been supported by conservative lawmakers as essential to national security and the rule of law.

Sanchez Faces Questions Over Alignment With Anti-ICE Rhetoric

Representative Gabriel Sanchez’s appearance at the rally is likely to raise questions from Cobb County constituents, especially in light of growing concerns over border security and the enforcement of immigration law. Critics argue that elected officials should stand with law enforcement and the rule of law, rather than support rallies that undermine federal immigration efforts.

Local Cobb constituents want to know why their representative is in support of criminal illegal aliens instead of upholding our nation’s immigration laws that are designed to protect our country’s sovereignty and its citizens?

Sanchez, a first-term legislator representing parts of Marietta and Smyrna, has not publicly commented on his appearance at the time of publishing. However his attendance aligns with radical progressive pushes to curb or dismantle immigration enforcement, even as 66% of Americans support the deportation of illegal immigrants according to various polls, and federal agencies report increases in border apprehensions and interior enforcement cases involving criminal aliens.

Sanchez’s Radicalism: A Pattern of Radical Left-Wing Activism

Representative Gabriel Sanchez’s participation in Monday’s anti-ICE rally is not an isolated incident, it reflects a deeper political alignment that has raised eyebrows among Cobb County residents. As previously reported by Cobb Voice, Sanchez has a well-documented history of involvement with radical far-left organizations and causes, including groups that embrace socialism, communism and openly Marxist ideologies.

In February, Sanchez made headlines after it was revealed that he had personally created and distributed videos on social media for criminal illegal aliens and activists on how to evade, resist and disrupt law enforcement actions, while acting in an official capacity as a state representative.

In past statements and affiliations, Sanchez has embraced policies that echo the agenda of Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) chapters of which he is a proud member. DSA openly advocates for the dismantling of capitalism and traditional law enforcement institutions. He has also been linked to activist coalitions that support sanctuary city policies, abolition of ICE, and redistribution-based economic models.

These ideological leanings clearly influence Sanchez’s conduct as a legislator. His public stance against federal immigration enforcement, and now his presence at rallies denouncing ICE, adds to a growing record that positions him far outside the mainstream of Georgia politics.

Protests Nationwide Turn Tense as Trump Defends National Guard Use

The Atlanta event came one day after protests in Los Angeles turned chaotic. According to the Associated Press, Sunday’s demonstrations escalated with participants blocking a major freeway, setting self-driving vehicles on fire, and clashing with law enforcement. Officers deployed tear gas and rubber bullets as tensions rose.

President Donald Trump, in a move to restore order, activated the National Guard in key areas. California Governor Gavin Newsom responded by announcing a lawsuit against the Trump administration, objecting to the federal deployment.

Voters Take Notice

With immigration once again at the center of the national debate, local lawmakers like Gabriel Sanchez are making their positions clear, not just in policy, but through public appearances. As border security and public safety remain key concerns for Georgia families, voters will be watching closely to see which leaders stand with enforcement, and which stand with the protestors.
