On Sunday, BioLab in Conyers, a manufacturer of spa and pool treatment products, caught fire due to a chemical reaction from a malfunctioning sprinkler sending an orange and black plume of smoke so high and so large that it could be seen on the weather radar.
This fire has impacted around 90,000 Georgia residents, with about 17,000 people called to evacuate on Sunday and most everyone else being asked to shelter in place indefinitely. On Sunday, both directions of I- 20 were closed in Conyers, but as of 7 a.m., the Georgia Department of Transportation reopened the highway.
According to the AP, officials in the area have said chlorine has been detected in the air from the fire and that residents are encouraged not to use their air conditioning units to not allow the chemicals inside their homes.
Currently, concerns center around air quality as a hazy mist has settled in the area and the wind continues to shift.
